Discover the authentic beauty of Moutier d’Ahun
A 45-minute drive away is Moutier d’Ahun, an enchanting village deep in the heart of the Creuse. At the centre of Moutier d’Ahun is the former Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Silvain, an architectural masterpiece dating back to the 10th century. What remains standing today is a breathtaking example of Romanesque art and architecture. It is an abbey church with imposing dimensions and a serene atmosphere.
But perhaps most spectacular are the 32 carved wooden choir stalls from the 17th century, crafted by Michel de la Rue. A true treasure trove of French Baroque sculpture, these choir stalls display amazing detail and vividness. They tell stories from the Bible, allegorical scenes and depictions of everyday life, and are an absolute must-see for any visitor.

Near the abbey, the ancient Pont de la Mouneyroux stretches across the river Creuse. This ancient stone arch bridge adds a picturesque element to the landscape and is a perfect place for a leisurely stroll or to simply enjoy the rippling water. From the bridge, you have great views of the abbey and the surrounding countryside, making it a favourite spot for photographers.
In short, we think this is a beautiful place with an authentic French feel. You can combine this outing well with a visit to chateau Villemonteix, see our blog about it.
